Yosemite National Park, CA Travel Tips
- A timed entry reservation is required to drive into Yosemite Valley during peak season (typically April through October) — secure yours at recreation.gov before booking any other part of your trip, as availability is limited.
- Book in-park lodging (Ahwahnee, Yosemite Valley Lodge, Curry Village) 6–12 months in advance — Yosemite is one of the hardest parks to find accommodations in, and staying in the valley eliminates the need for daily reservations.
- The Half Dome cables hike requires a separate permit lottery — enter the preseason lottery in March via recreation.gov for the best chances; daily lottery permits are also available but competitive.
- Visit Tunnel View at sunrise for the most iconic Yosemite Valley panorama before tour buses arrive — it's the single best free viewpoint in the park and transforms in morning light.
- Explore Tuolumne Meadows (open typically July through September) for a dramatically different and far less crowded Yosemite experience at nearly 9,000 feet elevation.
