Rocky Mountain National Park, CO Travel Tips
- A timed entry permit is required to enter the park during peak summer months (late May through mid-October) — book your permit at recreation.gov as soon as your trip dates are set, as they sell out fast.
- Trail Ridge Road is typically open late May through mid-October — check current road conditions on the NPS website before driving, as snow can close it unexpectedly even in summer.
- Bear Lake and the Glacier Gorge trailheads fill to capacity by 8–9 AM in summer — take the free park shuttle from the Park & Ride to avoid parking frustration and road closures.
- September is the absolute best month for elk viewing — arrive at Horseshoe Park or Moraine Park at dawn and dusk to watch bulls bugling and sparring during the rut.
- Altitude sickness is a real concern; the park's lowest trailheads start at 8,000+ feet. Spend a day acclimatizing in Denver or Estes Park before attempting strenuous hikes.
