Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN/NC Travel Tips
- Enter via the Cades Cove or Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail loops for the best wildlife sightings — dawn and dusk offer the highest chances of spotting black bears, deer, and elk.
- Arrive at Clingmans Dome at least 30 minutes before sunrise or sunset for the most dramatic views and significantly fewer crowds than midday.
- The park is free to enter, but timed entry permits are required during peak summer and fall weekends — reserve yours in advance at recreation.gov.
- Book lodging in Gatlinburg, Cherokee, or Bryson City well in advance for fall foliage season (mid-October), which is the park's absolute busiest period.
- Download the NPS Great Smoky Mountains app for offline trail maps and ranger program schedules — cell service is unreliable throughout much of the park.
