Yellowstone National Park, WY Travel Tips

  • Book lodging inside or near the park (West Yellowstone, Gardiner, or Cooke City) 6–12 months in advance — accommodations sell out fast for peak summer dates.
  • Pick up a Junior Ranger booklet at any visitor center so kids can earn their official badge while engaging with the park’s wildlife and geology.
  • Stay at least 25 yards from bison and elk, and 100 yards from bears and wolves — wildlife encounters are frequent and animals are unpredictable.
  • Old Faithful erupts roughly every 90 minutes; check the posted predicted times at the visitor center to plan your viewing without a long wait.
  • Carry layers, rain gear, and sun protection — Yellowstone’s high-elevation weather can shift rapidly, with afternoon thunderstorms common in summer.
